Choosing a name the traditional way

How the birth star guides the first syllable of a name — and how families balance tradition with meaning and sound.

Naming a child is one of the happiest family decisions, and in Tamil tradition it is often guided by the child's birth star.

The nakshatra and its padas

Each of the 27 nakshatras is divided into four quarters (padas), and each pada is traditionally associated with a particular starting sound. Choosing a name that begins with the sound linked to the child's pada is believed to be auspicious.

What a name consultation covers

  • Calculating the birth star and pada from the date, time and place of birth.
  • Suggesting suitable starting syllables in Tamil.
  • Reviewing names the family has already shortlisted.
  • Where families wish, considering a name for the deity of the family or a grandparent's name within these guidelines.

Balancing tradition and choice

A name also needs to be meaningful, easy to say and loved by the family. Tradition offers guidance on the starting sound; the final choice always belongs to the parents.

For adults

Some adults consider changing or adjusting the spelling of their name. A consultation can explain the traditional view, but it is worth weighing practical matters such as documents and records too.

Bring the birth details and your shortlist — the conversation is usually a pleasant one.
